Save a chat to Zeus

You had a good idea in a chat, away from your desk. This page shows how to send that chat to Zeus, so it is waiting on your Mac the next time you work on the idea.

In Zeus, an idea you are thinking through is called an exploration. When you save a chat to Zeus, the chat goes to the Zeus service, waits there, and your Mac takes it and adds it to the right exploration.

The part of Zeus that does this is called the Zeus connector. It works in three apps: the Claude app, Codex and ChatGPT. You add it to each app once, and you sign in once in each app.

Before you start

You need three things:

  • Zeus on your Mac, running. If you do not have it yet, follow Getting started with Zeus.

  • A Zeus team. The connector saves only for people who are on a team. If you are not on one yet, sign in on your Mac and make a team, or join one — Joining a team shows how:

    zeus login
    zeus team create <name>

  • A GitHub account. You sign in to the connector with GitHub.

Every app uses the same address for the connector:

https://team.zeusmode.ai/mcp

Today you add the connector by this address. The apps do not list Zeus in their own lists of connectors yet.

Add Zeus to the Claude app

  1. On claude.ai, or in the Claude desktop app, open Customize → Connectors, then + Add → Add custom connector.
  2. For the name, type Zeus. For the address, paste https://team.zeusmode.ai/mcp. Leave the two “OAuth” boxes empty. Click Add.
  3. Click Connect. Two pages open in your browser, one after the other — see Sign in, below.
  4. In a chat, turn Zeus on under + → Connectors.

The Claude app on your phone uses the same connector. Add it once on the web, and it is there on your phone too.

Add Zeus to Codex

In the Terminal, run these two commands:

codex mcp add zeus --url https://team.zeusmode.ai/mcp
codex mcp login zeus

The first command adds Zeus to Codex. The second one opens the two sign-in pages in your browser — see Sign in, below. A newer Codex may open the sign-in pages already after the first command, and print “Successfully logged in”. Then you do not need the second command.

The Codex desktop app and the codex command share one set of settings, so you add Zeus only once. If you prefer the desktop app: MCP servers → Add server → Streamable HTTP, the same address, then Save, Restart and Authenticate.

Add Zeus to ChatGPT

ChatGPT lets you add your own connector on the web, with a Pro account.

  1. On chatgpt.com, open Plugins, then + → Add custom MCP server.
  2. For the name, type Zeus. For the address, paste https://team.zeusmode.ai/mcp. For Authentication, choose OAuth.
  3. Accept the warning, click Create as a plugin, then install it. The two sign-in pages open in your browser — see Sign in, below.

We have not yet seen a full save from ChatGPT work from start to end. If ChatGPT will not save to Zeus, see If ChatGPT cannot save, below.

The first time, each app opens two pages in your browser:

  1. GitHub’s page. Sign in to GitHub, if you are not signed in already.
  2. Zeus’s page. It asks: “Allow the app to save text to Zeus?” Click Allow. The page sends you back to the app.

That is all. You do this once in each app, not once for each save.

The app keeps you signed in by itself. If you do not use Zeus from an app for 30 days, that app asks you to sign in again. It also asks again after you disconnect it. If you leave every Zeus team you are on, saves are refused until you are on a team again.

Save a chat

In a chat with Zeus turned on, say what the chat is about, in your own words:

Save this chat to Zeus — it is about merges that land without me.

The app asks you to allow the save. The Claude app asks whether to allow it once or always; Codex may not ask at all.

Then Zeus answers, and the chat tells you the answer, often in its own words. There are two answers:

  • Zeus knows the exploration. It says the title it saved to, and the size: saved to "Merges that land without me" — 4.2 KB (4200 bytes) of transcript.
  • Zeus is not sure. It says: saved — not sure which exploration; your Mac will ask you. Your Mac asks you in the Zeus app (see the next section). The chat never asks you to choose.

You can save a chat, a meeting’s transcript or a report. The connector saves text only, at most 1 MB in one save — about 500 pages. A longer text is refused, and the answer says how long it was. Save it in parts.

See your save on your Mac

Your Mac takes a save the next time it checks in. It checks about every 30 seconds while it is on, Zeus is running, and it is signed in to your team. If you have more than one Mac, the first one to check in takes the save.

In the Zeus app, open Explorations:

  • A save for an exploration is shown on that exploration’s page, under Uploads. It waits there for the next round of work on that exploration.
  • If Zeus thinks a save may belong to an exploration, it asks: “Looks like the title — right?” Click Yes, Another, or Not an exploration.
  • A save with no exploration is shown at the top of the Explorations page, in the Unmatched row: “Which exploration is it for?” Click Choose an exploration, or Not an exploration.

In the Terminal, this lists every save on your Mac, and where each one is:

zeus upload list

See or delete what you saved

In the chat. Ask:

What have I saved to Zeus?

The chat lists what is still waiting on the service — what no Mac has taken yet. To delete one, tell the chat which one: “delete the report I saved this morning”. It is deleted from the service for good.

In the Zeus app. Each save has a Delete button: on its exploration’s page, or in the Unmatched row.

In the Terminal. zeus upload list shows each save’s id, in the first column. To delete one:

zeus upload rm <id>

If no Mac takes a save within 30 days, the service deletes it. The Zeus app tells you, the next time your Mac checks in, how many copies were deleted this way, and for which exploration.

The privacy page says exactly what delete removes, and what is kept.

Disconnect an app

You can cut an app off at any time. Its next save is refused, until you sign in from it again.

In the chat. Say “disconnect Claude from Zeus” — or Codex, or ChatGPT.

On your Mac. This lists the apps signed in to Zeus as you:

zeus connectors

To disconnect one, give its name or its id, as the list shows it:

zeus connectors rm <app>

Removing the Zeus app from your GitHub settings does not disconnect it. Use one of the two ways above.

If ChatGPT cannot save

You can still bring a ChatGPT chat into Zeus. Copy the chat’s text, then:

  • In the Zeus app, open the exploration’s page and click Paste text under Uploads. Paste the text and click Save to this exploration.

  • Or in the Terminal, save the text to a file and run:

    zeus upload chat.txt --for E-1

E-1 is the exploration’s number, as the Zeus app shows it. Leave out --for E-1, and Zeus suggests an exploration.

If something goes wrong

The support page answers the most common problems, and says how to write to us. The privacy page says what the connector keeps, and for how long.
